The China Academy of Engineering Physics (CAEP), also known as the Ninth Academy or the Institute of Nuclear Physics and Chemistry, was established in 1958 as a national research and production institution for China's core strategic equipment. With a focus on national goals and relying on major equipment construction in China, CAEP conducts long-term basic research.
Graduate education at CAEP began in 1984 and has since produced a large number of strategic scientific and technological personnel for the country. In 2015, CAEP established the Graduate School of the China Academy of Engineering Physics (GSCAEP) in Beijing on the basis of the former Graduate Department, with a new mission to build a distinctive and first-class graduate school through scientific and educational cooperation. To achieve this new mission, GSCAEP has set a new direction: first, to implement customized graduate education with national goals; second, to conduct basic research open to strategic needs and scientific frontiers; and third, to promote the capacity building of CAEP's basic research team through scientific and educational cooperation.
Leveraging the advantages of CAEP's university and large-scale engineering research platforms and relying on 16 scientific entities and six national key laboratories, as well as a group of mentors composed of recipients of the "Two Bombs, One Satellite" Meritorious Service Medal, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and leading figures in various disciplines, GSCAEP has become a training base for high-end talents.
GSCAEP currently has five postdoctoral mobile stations, six first-level doctoral degree authorization points (including 17 second-level doctoral degree authorization points), four first-level master's degree authorization points, and one second-level master's degree authorization point. There are 321 doctoral supervisors and 519 master's supervisors in various fields, covering many disciplines such as mathematics, physics, mechanics, mechanical engineering, optical engineering, materials science and engineering, electronic science and technology, information and communication engineering, computer science and technology, weapons science and technology, and nuclear science and technology.
In 2021, GSCAEP admitted 170 master's students, 191 doctoral students, and 18 jointly trained doctoral students. As of December 2021, there were a total of 1,266 students, including 806 doctoral students and 460 master's students.
Since 1984, GSCAEP has provided nearly 2,000 master's students and over 900 doctoral students for China's strategic equipment construction and high-tech equipment fields, providing strong talent support for the continuous and healthy development of China's major equipment construction.
