On August 10, 2023, the Energy Physics Frontiers Seminar and Energy Physics Science Forum, organized by the Graduate School of China Academy of Engineering Physics and the Beijing Computational Science Research Center, were successfully held in Beijing. The event saw the presence of esteemed experts and scholars, including Academician Xiangwan Du of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Academician Jindong Zhao of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Academician Changpu Sun of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Academician Minxing Luo of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Researcher Shaoping Zhu from the Institute of Applied Physics and Computational Mathematics in Beijing, Researcher Libin Fu from the Graduate School of the China Academy of Engineering Physics, Researcher Suhuai Wei from the Beijing Computational Science Research Center, and Researcher Yuxiang Weng from the Institute of Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Researcher Libin Fu, Vice President of the Graduate School of China Academy of Engineering Physics, presided over the opening ceremony of the seminar, known as the Energy Physics Science Forum. He also provided an overview of the Graduate School of China Academy of Engineering Physics and introduced the background and objectives of the seminar.
Academician Changpu Sun delivered a welcoming address to all the distinguished guests, young scholars, and participants. He emphasized that energy is the foundation of modern society and economic activities, while physics is the core discipline for exploring the fundamentals of energy technology. He noted that China is at a crucial juncture in its energy transition and stressed the need for in-depth research on how to balance environmental constraints and societal demands to effectively generate and utilize energy for sustainable economic and social development.
Academician Xiangwan Du delivered a keynote address titled "Exploring the Sources of Energy." Starting from the history of human energy consumption, he discussed the characteristics and physical origins of various forms of energy and encouraged young scholars to diligently study and explore the sources of the universe, the sun, and energy itself.
Academician Jindong Zhao delivered a keynote address titled "Light Absorption and Conversion in Photosynthesis." He began with a story from the Galapagos Islands and eloquently explained the origins of life and photosynthesis. He provided a comprehensive and detailed discussion of the principles, mechanisms, and recent advances in this field.
This ten-day seminar, funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China's theoretical physics special fund, is divided into five thematic sections: Photosynthesis, Energy Materials, Dynamics Detection in Energy Materials, Nuclear Energy Development, and Fundamentals of Thermodynamics in Energy Physics. It has brought together 30 renowned domestic experts and scholars to share their research findings and insights in the field of energy physics, aiming to collectively explore ways to advance energy technology.
