To promote the high-quality development of the Doctoral Degree Authorization in Physics at the China Academy of Engineering Physics, and in accordance with the relevant requirements of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council and the Ministry of Education for the self-evaluation of degree authorization site, the on-site evaluation meeting by experts for the Doctoral Degree Authorization in Physics was successfully held on December 19, 2024, at the Software Park Campus of the Graduate School of the China Academy of Engineering Physics.
The evaluation expert group was led by Professor Xuehua Wang from Sun Yat-sen University, with members including Professor Wei Wang from Nanjing University, Researcher Baifei Shen from Shanghai Normal University, Professor Leman Kuang from Hunan Normal University, Professor Furong Xu from Peking University, Professor Honggang Luo from Lanzhou University, and Professor Yugui Yao from Beijing Institute of Technology. Over 30 people participated in the on-site evaluation meeting, including Academician Changpu Sun, Chairman of the Degree Evaluation Committee of the China Academy of Engineering Physics; Party Secretary Jialiang Ni of the Graduate School of the Academy; Vice Dean Libin Fu (acting as administrative head); Vice Dean Jianhui Shan; academic leaders and young backbone representatives of the Physics discipline at the Academy; and staff from departments related to graduate education at the Graduate School. The meeting was chaired by Researcher Hui Dong, Deputy Director of the Science and Education Collaboration Center of the Academy.
The meeting began with a speech by Academician Changpu Sun. He extended a warm welcome and heartfelt thanks to the attending experts. He stated that the graduate education in the physics discipline at the China Academy of Engineering Physics has a glorious history and distinct characteristics, having cultivated a large number of talents for national defense and scientific development over the years. He expressed his hope that this evaluation would further promote the high-quality development of the physics discipline at the Academy.
Subsequently, Vice Dean Libin Fu gave a brief overview of the self-evaluation work for the degree authorization site
in the physics discipline at the China Academy of Engineering Physics. He emphasized that the on-site evaluation by experts is crucial for the development of the degree authorization site and sincerely invited the attending experts to provide valuable opinions and suggestions. He expressed hope that the evaluation would drive improvements, helping the physics discipline at the Academy achieve new breakthroughs in talent cultivation quality and discipline development."
Researcher Jie Liu from the Graduate School introduced the development history of the China Academy of Engineering Physics and its Graduate School to the attending experts and provided a comprehensive report on the self-evaluation of the physics degree authorization site. The report covered multiple aspects, including the development history of graduate education, training objectives and degree award standards, disciplines and training directions, faculty and research platforms, distinctive highlights, talent cultivation and quality assurance systems, major issues, and improvement plans. The presentation offered a comprehensive overview of the construction and development of the physics degree authorization site. After the report, the attending experts engaged in in-depth questions and discussions on the related topics.
After listening to the report, the evaluation expert group held a discussion with representatives from the Physics discipline's mentors and students. Following a lively and thorough discussion, the expert group highly praised the achievements of the Physics degree authorization site at the China Academy of Engineering Physics in recent years across various aspects. The expert group recognized that the training program for the Physics degree authorization site is systematic, distinctive, and that the graduate training objectives are clear and accurately positioned. The mentor team structure is reasonable and strong, leveraging the advantages of the Academy’s large scientific facilities and specialized research platforms. This has led to notable successes in talent cultivation, scientific research, and social services. The expert group unanimously agreed that the evaluation result for the Physics degree authorization site at the Academy was "qualified." At the same time, the expert group expressed high expectations, hoping that the Academy’s Physics degree authorization site would closely align with medium- and long-term development goals, further improve the quality of graduate student recruitment, gradually expand enrollment, and strengthen efforts to introduce and cultivate outstanding young and mid-career talents, thereby laying a more solid foundation for the long-term development of the discipline.
Finally, Vice Dean Libin Fu expressed heartfelt thanks to the expert group for their hard work and professional evaluation. He pointed out that the evaluation of the degree authorization site is an important aspect of the graduate education and discipline development at the China Academy of Engineering Physics. This evaluation not only summarized the characteristics and advantages of the Physics degree authorization site but also accurately identified existing issues, achieving the goal of diagnostic evaluation. He stated that, in response to the expert group’s valuable suggestions, the Graduate School will actively implement and continue to strengthen the development of the Physics degree authorization site, making greater contributions to the talent cultivation efforts in the field of Physics.
