On December 11, 2023, the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Sciences organized a "National Natural Science Foundation Proposal Exchange Meeting." Academician Changpu Sun, Researcher Libin Fu, Professor Jianmin Yuan, Researcher Jie Liu, and other full-time faculty of the Graduate School, as well as postdoctoral fellows, attended the meeting. The meeting was presided over by Associate Dean (in charge of administrative affairs) Libin Fu.

At the beginning of the meeting, Researcher Libin Fu welcomed the attendees and emphasized the significance of the gathering. He expressed the hope that young scholars would seize the opportunity for exchange, learn from the experience of proposal submissions, and enhance the quality of their own research proposals.

Researcher Ying Li delivered a keynote presentation titled "Structure in Grant Proposal Writing," where she elaborated on the key points of writing different sections of a research proposal using several illustrative examples. She recommended employing a "structure + keywords" approach, transforming the proposal into a tabular format to facilitate quick identification of essential information by the reviewers within a limited time frame.

Researcher Gaomin Tang delivered a keynote presentation titled "Selection Significance in NSFC Youth/Foundation Proposals." Drawing from personal application experience, he shared insights on how to choose scientific questions, define research content, select technical methods, and highlight individual research strengths.

Assistant Researcher Lijun Xu delivered a keynote presentation titled "Theoretical Modeling in Grant Applications," exploring the strategy of "opening a variety store to satisfy the judges." He emphasized the importance of using a strategy that "reduces burden" to make it easier for judges to read through the proposal and "adds color" to highlight its significance.

Academician Changpu Sun delivered a keynote presentation titled "Grant Application and Research Style," where he discussed the funding orientation in the new era of the National Natural Science Foundation Committee and the "original intentions" behind the establishment of talent projects. Additionally, Academician Sun emphasized issues related to research style, urging researchers to respect all collaborators and maintain a realistic and appropriately cited approach in their research endeavors.

In the final discussion session, Academician Changpu Sun, Researcher Libin Fu, Professor Jianmin Yuan, and Researcher Jie Liu shared successful cases and lessons learned from their perspectives as reviewers for the National Natural Science Foundation. The atmosphere of the exchange was lively, and the discussions were fruitful, laying a solid foundation for the Graduate School's 2024 National Natural Science Foundation application efforts.
