To commemorate the 67th anniversary of the founding of the China Academy of Engineering Physics (CAEP) and to further promote the spirit of the “Two Bombs,” Zhiping Deng, son of renowned nuclear physicist and “Two Bombs” pioneer Jiaxian Deng, was invited to deliver a special lecture titled “Devoting Oneself to the Nation—Stories of My Father, Jiaxian Deng” on the afternoon of October 28. Faculty and students from both the Beijing and Sichuan campuses of the Graduate School of China Academy of Engineering Physics (GSCAEP), as well as representatives from Tsinghua University, Beihang University, and the China Ship Scientific Research Center, attended the lecture. The event was chaired by Jianhui Shan, Deputy Dean of GSCAEP.
Drawing on extensive photographs and historical materials, Zhiping Deng recounted how his father, at a time when the nation faced crisis and devastation, developed a profound sense of responsibility encapsulated in the belief “the rise and fall of the nation concerns every citizen,” and committed himself to saving the country through science. He further detailed how Jiaxian Deng, after being transferred to the Ninth Institute of the Second Ministry of Machine-Building, led his research team to tackle the most challenging theoretical problems in nuclear weapons design—starting from intensive study of the “three foundational books,” relying on self-sufficiency, enduring hardship, pooling collective intelligence, and achieving major breakthroughs step by step.
In his lecture, Zhiping Deng not only portrayed the touching and admirable image of his father as both a scientist and a loving parent but also vividly demonstrated the noble spirit and historical contributions of Jiaxian Deng as a national hero. Throughout every major decision in his life, Jiaxian Deng steadfastly placed national needs above personal or family interests. He devoted his entire life to China’s nuclear weapons, and even in his final days, his heart remained with the nation. His 62-year life journey stands as a powerful embodiment of the “Two Bombs Spirit.” In closing, Zhiping Deng encouraged all GSCAEP students to set ambitious goals, study diligently, learn from history, cherish the achievements of past generations in national defense science and technology, and carry forward the “Two Bombs Spirit” to contribute their youth and wisdom to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
Before the lecture, the actor who portrayed Jiaxian Deng in Tsinghua University’s stage production “The Blooming of the Malan Flower” held an in-depth discussion with Zhiping Deng and presented several books published by Tsinghua University.
