First Lesson of the School Year: Scientific Ethics and Academic Integrity—Lecture by Academician Changpu Sun

On September 4, 2023, Academician Changpu Sun from the Graduate School delivered the first lesson to the incoming class of 2023 on "Scientific Ethics and Academic Integrity." The lecture was conducted in a combined online and offline format, with the main venue at the South Building of the Beijing Software Park Campus. Simultaneously, satellite venues were set up at the North Building of the Software Park Campus, as well as in Mianyang, Chengdu, and other locations. The special lecture was presided over by Associate Dean (Administrative Affairs) Researcher Libin Fu of the Graduate School.

Academician Sun began his talk with the headline "China only took two and a half years from atomic bomb to hydrogen bomb" in the context of the "Two Bombs, One Satellite" initiative. This headline guided graduate students through the background of China's development of nuclear weapons. Drawing on the firsthand experiences of senior scientists within the institution and intertwining with the history of China's nuclear weapons development and the institute's growth, Academician Sun pointed out that the key factors in achieving the "Two Bombs Spirit" were diverse and inseparable. He emphasized the importance of unwavering national determination and strategic goals, effective academic organizational leadership in accordance with scientific principles, nationwide unity and cooperation, and the collaboration of technological elites under the banner of patriotism. Academician Sun highlighted the "Two Bombs Spirit" values of patriotism, dedication, hard work, collaborative problem-solving, practical innovation, and the pursuit of excellence. While these values may sound abstract when spoken today, Academician Sun connected them with vivid historical narratives. As students of the Ninth Academy, he urged the audience to deeply understand and embody the "Two Bombs Spirit."

Academician Sun transitioned from discussing the spirit of science to that of scientists, emphasizing the importance of contemplating fundamental research aligned with practical needs in the course of scientific exploration. Sharing his own research experiences, Academician Sun recounted a story of writing a letter to Mr. Huanwu Peng to correct errors. Through the explanation of the transformative process from being a student to becoming a scientist, known as the "metamorphosis from caterpillar to butterfly," he vividly introduced the significance of the scientific spirit in scientific creation: Through creative learning, one can truly appreciate the joy of research, echoing the sentiment, "Amidst challenging terrains, doubts arise about the path ahead; in the dimness, a village emerges as the willows darken and the flowers brighten." This encapsulates the pleasure of scientific exploration gained through innovative learning.

Finally, Academician Sun imparted a message to the students, encouraging them to actively integrate the "Two Bombs Spirit" and the "Scientist Spirit" into their daily academic lives. He urged them to resonate with the mission of the times and strive to achieve their youthful ideals.

The "Two Bombs Spirit" and the core values of the China Academy of Engineering Physics are not only exhibited in the museum but are also passed down through generations with warmth. The scientific spirit is not just a characteristic of renowned scientists; it is also the research and learning conduct pursued by every student of the Ninth Academy. After this course, students not only gained a deeper understanding of the Ninth Academy's research and exploration journey but also harvested numerous insights and suggestions on research spirit, research literacy, and self-development.
