On September 8, 2023, as part of the educational series for the incoming class of 2023, the Graduate School organized an 'Academician Expert Lecture' and invited Academician Side Hu to deliver a special lecture for the new students titled 'Upholding the Spirit of Two Bombs, One Satellite, Firming Ideals and Beliefs, Striving for the Realization of the Chinese Dream,' emphasizing the core values of nuclear scientists. The lecture was hosted by Associate Dean (Administrative Affairs) Libin Fu, a researcher at the Graduate School.

Academician Side Hu has been working at the China Academy of Engineering Physics since its establishment in 1958, accumulating a career spanning 65 years. He has served as the director of the Academy and can be considered a witness to the establishment and development of the Academy. Academician Hu is deeply committed to graduate education at our Academy, having personally conducted numerous lectures for graduate students. Many of the students he has mentored are now actively engaged in crucial roles within our Academy.

Academician Hu starts with the question, "Why does China need to develop nuclear weapons?" as the opening, introducing the theme of the lecture. From the perspective of an eyewitness, he takes us through the background, challenges, development process, and the splendid achievements of China in developing nuclear weapons.

Academician Hu, through a plethora of precious images and vivid, touching examples, narrates the remarkable stories of senior scientists such as Jiaxian Deng, Huanwu Peng, Ganchang Wang, Zuqia Huang, Guangzhao Zhou, Yonghuai Guo, Min Yu, and others. These scientists from the older generation, facing extreme difficulties, worked tirelessly and made selfless contributions, even sacrificing their lives, to China's nuclear cause. Their inspiring deeds, conducted under alias and in challenging conditions, vividly illustrate the spirit of scientific truth-seeking, the promotion of academic democracy, a strong sense of responsibility and national mission, as well as a valuable sense of dedication to their cause. This embodies the profound essence of the "Two Bombs, One Satellite" spirit: "Love the country, selfless dedication, self-reliance, hard work, strong collaboration, and daring to climb new heights.

"I feel extremely honored to have the opportunity to work with them, receive their guidance and assistance," said Academician Side Hu when recalling his seniors and colleagues who were involved in nuclear science work together. "It's not just their profound academic accomplishments, diverse scientific thinking, and skills, but also their loyalty to the motherland and selfless dedication. Their spirit of daring to take responsibility for the cause, and their commitment to the pragmatic and truth-seeking scientific spirit, have provided me with great education and influence."

In the concluding remarks of the lecture, Academician Hu warmly addressed the new generation, expressing his anticipation: "I look forward to the young individuals here vigorously carrying forward the spirit of 'Two Bombs, One Satellite,' inheriting the glorious traditions of patriotism, dedication, pragmatism, and innovation from the older generation of scientists. Strive to fulfill the expectations of President Xi: Dedicate yourselves to the cause of the Party and the people, leaving behind no regrets in the new era and on the new journey of endeavor!

During the interactive session, Academician Hu attentively listened and systematically addressed the questions raised by the students one by one.

The splendid presentation earned continuous and enthusiastic applause from the entire audience of teachers and students. On the occasion of the upcoming 39th Teachers' Day, representatives from the 2023 freshmen presented flowers to Academician Hu, expressing their admiration and holiday wishes for him.
